B NEAR THE PERCHE CAPITAL

50km/31mi. 5hrs (including château).

Head north from Nogent on the D 103; before La Hurie, turn left on D 154 to go to Frétigny; St Andrew’s church (t02 37 49 40 26), whichhas 12C–13C frescoes. Now take the D 5 S for Thiron-Gardais, to Thiron Abbey. Park across from the tourist office and gardens (>abbey: weekdays 9am–5.30pm; gardens closed 12.30–1.30pm; |€3; May–Oct 3.30–6pm; t02 37 49 49 49). Founded in 1114, the Benedictine Order of Thiron was influential 12C–13C. The vast church has 14C stalls. Visitors can learn about medieval abbey life in the gardens.

Drive south on the D 5 to Argenvilliers, to the 18C Château d’Ourisères (park open 10am–5pm, no charge; guided tour of château by appt; t02 37 29 43 68).

From there, take the D 3713 to Ferme de Rougemont where there is an immense view of the region. From here, head for Vichères, take the D 1121, right. Just before Nogent, turn at the chapel on your left for a beautiful view of the countryside around the Perche capital.
